Dibrugarh stands on the Brahmaputra, and tea gardens spread across the country around it. The city has a university and a railway station, and it is a busy centre of the Assam tea trade, serving the gardens all around it.
Dibru-Saikhowa National Park lies across the river to the north-east, a wetland of grassland, swamp and forest on the Brahmaputra floodplain, known for its birds and its herds of feral horses. Kaziranga National Park, famous for its one-horned rhinoceros, lies a long drive to the west.
Assamese food is built on rice, mustard oil and river fish. Masor tenga, a sour fish curry flavoured with tomato or lemon, is typical, and Assam's tea is drunk plain or with milk. The monsoon from June to September floods the plains, and October to April is the best time to visit.
