Córdoba was the capital of Moorish Spain in the 10th century, one of the largest and most learned cities in Europe, and its old town is a World Heritage site. The Mezquita-Catedral, begun as a mosque in the 8th century, has a forest of double-arched columns in red and white and a Christian cathedral built inside it in the 16th century. A Roman bridge crosses the Guadalquivir to the Calahorra Tower.
The Judería, the old Jewish quarter, has narrow whitewashed lanes, a 14th-century synagogue and the Calleja de las Flores, whose walls are hung with flowerpots. The Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos has Moorish-style gardens with pools. Medina Azahara, the ruined palace city of the caliphs, lies about eight kilometres west, and the Subbética hills and whitewashed villages are to the south. Seneca, Averroes and Maimonides were all born in Córdoba.
In early May the patios festival, an old tradition, opens private courtyards full of geraniums and jasmine to visitors. Salmorejo, a thick cold tomato soup topped with ham and egg, rabo de toro, oxtail stew, and flamenquín, rolled pork fried in breadcrumbs, are local classics, with fino from nearby Montilla. Summers are very hot.
