Charlottetown sits on the south shore of Prince Edward Island, on a harbour fed by three rivers. In 1864 delegates met in Province House, a sandstone building that is still the seat of the provincial legislature, to discuss uniting the colonies of British North America. The Confederation Centre of the Arts stands nearby, the spires of St Dunstan's Basilica rise over the streets, and Victoria Row keeps its brick storefronts, now cafés and restaurants.
A short drive north, Prince Edward Island National Park holds long beaches, dunes and red sandstone cliffs, and near Cavendish the green-gabled farmhouse that inspired Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables draws readers from around the world. The Confederation Bridge, 12.9 km long, links the island to New Brunswick, and fishing villages and lighthouses dot the red-soil coast.
Mussels, oysters and lobster are the island's famous seafood, often served at lobster suppers in church and community halls, and the island's potatoes grow in its red soil. Summer is the beach season and autumn brings red and gold leaves, while winters are cold and snowy.
