Experience the best of Bristol

Bristol is a harbour city in south-west England, known for the Clifton Suspension Bridge, Brunel's SS Great Britain, street art and a creative streak.

Bristol grew rich as a port on the Avon, and the floating harbour at its heart is lined with museums, warehouses turned into flats, and cafés. Brunel's SS Great Britain, the pioneering iron steamship, sits in the dry dock where she was built, and nearby are the M Shed museum and Aerospace Bristol, home to a Concorde. Above the Avon Gorge, Brunel's Clifton Suspension Bridge spans the cliffs, with lawns and Georgian terraces on the Clifton side.

The city's creative side shows in its street art, which includes early work by Banksy, and in neighbourhoods such as Stokes Croft. St Mary Redcliffe, a vast Gothic church, and Bristol Cathedral stand in different parts of the old city. Beyond, Bath lies about twenty kilometres to the south-east, Cheddar Gorge and Wells are a short drive south, and the Severn estuary and the Wye Valley open to the north and west.

Cider is the West Country's drink, and Bristol's pubs pour it beside local ales, with pies, roast dinners and a growing line of independent restaurants. In August the sky above Ashton Court fills with hot-air balloons at the city's balloon fiesta. Summers are mild, and rain is never far away.
