Experience the best of Bonne Bay

Bonne Bay is a deep inlet of the Gulf of St Lawrence on the west coast of Newfoundland, with two long arms reaching into the mountains. Gros Morne National Park, a World Heritage site, surrounds it, and small fishing communities such as Woody Point, Norris Point and Rocky Harbour sit on its shores. The Long Range Mountains rise steeply behind.

The Tablelands, a bare orange plateau of rock from deep inside the Earth, rise above Woody Point. Western Brook Pond, a freshwater fjord enclosed by tall cliffs, can be seen from boat trips, and the trail up Gros Morne Mountain climbs to a high, stony plateau. The Lobster Cove Head lighthouse watches over the coast, and moose are common in the forest and bogs.

Cod, mussels and lobster are the seafood, with Jiggs dinner, boiled salt beef with vegetables, and toutons, fried bread dough served with molasses, as old Newfoundland dishes. Partridgeberries and bakeapples are picked in the bogs, and the weather on this coast can change in an hour, from sun to fog to rain.
