Benidorm lies on the Costa Blanca in the province of Alicante. Tourism from the 1950s turned a fishing village into a dense skyline of high-rise hotels and apartment blocks rising behind the sand. Levante Beach on the east side and Poniente Beach on the west are separated by the old town on a rocky promontory, where the Mirador del Castell viewpoint looks over the sea and the blue-domed Church of San Jaime stands.
Boats run to the Isla de Benidorm, a rocky islet offshore, and the Serra Gelada Natural Park has cliff walks between Benidorm and Albir. Guadalest, a village with a castle and a reservoir, lies inland, Altea is a white village of artists to the north, Calpe has the great rock of the Peñón de Ifach, and Villajoyosa has coloured houses by the sea. Alicante is about forty kilometres south.
Paella and arroz a banda, rice cooked in fish stock, come with tapas and grilled seafood, and horchata, a sweet tiger-nut drink, is a Valencian favourite. Turrón, the almond nougat, is from the nearby towns of Jijona and Alicante, and mild, sunny winters bring many visitors from northern Europe.
