Almería lies on a wide bay in Andalucía's far south-east, one of the sunniest and driest corners of Europe. Above the port, the Alcazaba, built by the Moorish caliphate in the tenth century, is one of the largest Arab fortresses in Spain, with walled courtyards, gardens and views to the sea. The cathedral, built in the sixteenth century, has thick walls and towers designed to fend off pirates.

East of the city, Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park is a stretch of volcanic coast, with cliffs, coves, salt pans and beaches such as Los Genoveses and Mónsul. Inland, the Tabernas Desert is dry badland where many westerns were filmed, and the whitewashed hill village of Níjar is known for its pottery and woven rugs. A sea of plastic greenhouses west of town supplies much of Europe's winter vegetables.

In Almería a small tapa traditionally arrives with each drink, and menus feature red prawns from Garrucha, grilled fish, gurullos, a stew with small pasta, and migas. Sweet tomatoes and peppers from the region fill the markets. Winters are mild and sunny, and summers are hot, so spring and autumn are the easiest times for coastal walks.
