Experience the best of Aberfeldy

Aberfeldy stands on the south bank of the River Tay in Highland Perthshire, a small market town with grey stone houses and a pleasant main street. Wade's Bridge, a handsome stone bridge over the Tay, was built in 1733 as part of General Wade's military road network. A monument nearby recalls the Black Watch regiment, first mustered in this area in 1740.

The Birks of Aberfeldy, a wooded gorge with waterfalls that inspired a poem by Robert Burns, is a short walk from the centre. Castle Menzies, a sixteenth-century tower house, stands at Weem. Loch Tay lies to the west, overlooked by Ben Lawers, one of the highest mountains in the area, and Schiehallion, a cone-shaped peak, rises to the north-west.

Perthshire raspberries, venison, salmon and oatcakes fill the local menus, and a distillery at the edge of town draws whisky lovers. The Tay is popular for white-water rafting and salmon fishing. Autumn turns the glen's birch woods to copper and gold, and spring brings a quiet freshness.
