Highlights
In 305 AD, a Roman Emperor did something no emperor had ever done — he retired. He chose this exact spot on the Dalmatian coast, and the palace he built became the living, breathing heart of Split. This self-guided audio tour takes you inside that story. Walk through the Bronze Gate where Diocletian may have arrived by sea, stand in the Peristyle where subjects prostrated themselves before him, and discover how his mausoleum became a cathedral dedicated to a saint he himself had executed in one of history's great ironies. Along the way, you'll rub the lucky toe of a giant bronze bishop, find Europe's narrowest street , learn why Split's fish market has zero flies, and spot the clues that reveal where Roman Split ends and Venetian Split begins. 15 stops at your pace. Available in 9 languages. Works offline. Over 20,000 travelers have explored with our audio walking tours, and a full refund guarantee means there's nothing to lose.

About Split
Split is a busy Dalmatian port built within and around a Roman emperor's palace, with ferries to some of Croatia's loveliest islands.
Diocletian's Palace, built around the turn of the fourth century as the emperor's retirement home, is the old town itself: its walls, cellars and courtyards hold homes, shops and cafés. The Peristyle, the colonnaded heart, leads to the Cathedral of St Domnius, once the emperor's mausoleum, and its bell tower gives views over the rooftops.
Top-ranked sights in Split: Budikovac Island (Veliki Budikovac), Blue Lagoon Croatia (Krknjasi Bay), Peristyle Square (Peristil).
