Experience the best of Hvar

Hvar is a long Adriatic island of lavender, vineyards and Venetian stonework, with a harbour town beneath a hilltop fortress.

Hvar town curves around a harbour on the island's south-west coast, with a broad stone square, a Renaissance loggia and a Venetian arsenal. The upper floor of the arsenal holds a theatre dating from 1612, among the oldest public theatres in Europe. Above the town, the fortress on the hill gives the best view over the red roofs and the Pakleni Islands offshore.

The island is nearly seventy kilometres long. Stari Grad, on the north coast, was founded by Greek settlers in the fourth century BC, and the plain beside it, still farmed in the original pattern of walled fields, is a UNESCO site. Lavender colours the hills of the interior in early summer, and Vrboska, Jelsa and Sućuraj are small fishing villages. The Pakleni Islands, a chain of pine-covered islets, are a short boat ride from the harbour.

Gregada, a fish stew with potatoes, and grilled squid come with olive oil and local wine: Plavac Mali, a dark red from the steep south-facing slopes near Ivan Dolac, and Bogdanuša, a white from the island itself. Lavender honey and liqueurs are sold across Hvar. Summer is hot and sunny, and May and September are quieter.
