Rovinj's old town stands on an oval peninsula, once an island, with narrow cobbled lanes winding up to the baroque church of St Euphemia, whose bell tower, modelled on St Mark's in Venice, rises above the sea. Pastel houses crowd around the harbour, and the Balbi Arch marks one of the old gates. Venice ruled the town for five centuries, and Italian remains in daily use beside Croatian.

South of the town, the Zlatni Rt forest park is a green headland of pines and cypresses with pebble beaches and walking paths. Offshore, the Rovinj islands, including Sveta Katarina and Crveni Otok, are short boat rides away, and the Brijuni archipelago lies a little further south. Inland, the Lim Fjord, a deep wooded inlet, and the hill towns of Motovun and Grožnjan are within easy reach.

Istrian cooking mixes Italian and Slavic habits: fuži pasta with truffles or wild asparagus, grilled sardines, black risotto and fine local olive oil. Malvazija, a white wine, and Teran, a dark red, come from nearby vineyards. Truffle season runs through autumn, when the town is calmer than in high summer.
