Makarska lies on a wide bay on the Dalmatian coast, sheltered by a wooded peninsula and backed by the grey limestone wall of the Biokovo mountains. The small old town centres on Kačić Square, where the church of St Mark stands, and a palm-lined promenade follows the harbour past cafés and fishing boats. The Franciscan monastery holds a museum of sea shells.
The Makarska Riviera, a string of villages with pebble beaches, runs for many kilometres along the foot of the mountains. It includes Brela, known for its pine-fringed coves, and Baška Voda, Tučepi and Podgora. Biokovo Nature Park rises behind, with walking trails to high summits and views over the islands of Brač and Hvar, and ferries cross to Brač from nearby ports.
Dalmatian cooking relies on olive oil, grilled fish, black risotto and peka, meat or octopus slow-cooked under an iron bell covered with embers. The sea is warm enough for swimming from June into October, and the summers are hot and dry. Local reds from the Plavac Mali grape are poured with the meal.
