Pula's Roman amphitheatre, built in the first century AD, is among the best preserved in the world, with its outer walls standing on all sides, and concerts and film screenings are staged on the sand inside. Nearby stand the Temple of Augustus, the Arch of the Sergii and the Forum, reminders that Pula was an important Roman colony. Austro-Hungarian naval buildings add a later layer, and James Joyce taught English here in 1904 and 1905.
Beyond the old town, Verudela has promontory paths and pebble coves, and Kamenjak, at the southern tip of the peninsula, is a nature park of wild beaches and low cliffs. The Brijuni islands, a national park of woodland and meadows just off the coast, were once Tito's summer retreat and hold dinosaur footprints. Rovinj, a harbour town on a headland, lies further up the coast.
Istria's table is built on olive oil, truffles, wild asparagus in spring, air-dried pršut ham and fuži, a hand-rolled pasta served with game or truffle. Malvazija is the local white wine and Teran the dark red. Grilled sea bass and scampi come straight from the Adriatic, and the water stays warm and clear through the summer.
