Experience the best of Split
Split is a busy Dalmatian port built within and around a Roman emperor's palace, with ferries to some of Croatia's loveliest islands.

Diocletian's Palace, built around the turn of the fourth century as the emperor's retirement home, is the old town itself: its walls, cellars and courtyards hold homes, shops and cafés. The Peristyle, the colonnaded heart, leads to the Cathedral of St Domnius, once the emperor's mausoleum, and its bell tower gives views over the rooftops.
The Riva, a palm-lined waterfront promenade, buzzes with cafés, and Marjan Hill, a forested park on the peninsula, offers trails, viewpoints and small beaches. Bačvice, the city beach, is known for picigin, a local ball game played in the shallows. Ferries and catamarans connect to Hvar, Brač and Vis, and the Blue Cave and the waterfalls of Krka and Plitvice are popular day trips.
Dalmatian cooking features grilled fish, pašticada slow-cooked beef, black risotto, local wines and olive oil. Late spring and early autumn are lovely, and in early May the city honours its patron saint, St Domnius, with a fair along the Riva. Nearby Trogir, a walled town on a small island, is a gem of stone lanes and Romanesque churches.
