Experience the best of Zagreb
Zagreb is Croatia's capital, a city of two historic towns, cathedral spires, café-lined streets and green parks beneath Mount Medvednica.

Zagreb has two historic halves. The Upper Town, Gornji Grad, sits on a hill with cobbled lanes, the tiled-roof church of St Mark and the Lotrščak Tower, from which a cannon is fired at noon each day. Below, the Lower Town has Austro-Hungarian squares, theatres and museums around Ban Jelačić Square, with the twin neo-Gothic spires of the cathedral just east and a short funicular linking the two parts.
Dolac, the open-air market behind the main square, sells produce under red umbrellas, and the Mirogoj cemetery is a landscaped park of arcades. Museums include the quirky Museum of Broken Relationships. Mount Medvednica rises behind the city with hiking and a cable car, Samobor, a small old town, is half an hour west, and Plitvice Lakes National Park, with its terraced waterfalls, is about two hours south.
Local food includes štrukli, baked or boiled cheese pastry, along with roast meats and sausages, and the cream cakes of Samobor. Café culture is strong, and people spend long mornings over coffee. Spring and autumn are comfortable, summer is warm, winters are cold, and Advent brings markets and lights across the centre.
