A walk around the city walls, nearly two kilometres of towers and bastions, gives unforgettable views over the rooftops and the sea. Inside, the Stradun, the polished limestone main street, runs from the Pile Gate past Onofrio's Fountain, the Franciscan Monastery with its old pharmacy, and the Rector's Palace.

Fort Lovrijenac stands on a rock outside the walls, and a cable car climbs Mount Srđ for sweeping views of the old city and the Elaphiti Islands. Lokrum, a short boat ride away, is a green island of botanical gardens and peacocks. Many scenes from Game of Thrones were filmed in the old town, drawing fans to its streets and stairways.

Seafood dominates the local table: black risotto, oysters from nearby Ston, grilled fish and Dalmatian wines. May, June and September offer warm seas and calmer streets, while in July and August the Dubrovnik Summer Festival stages plays and concerts in the old town's squares and forts. Day trips reach Kotor in Montenegro, Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the islands of Mljet and Korčula.
