Šibenik climbs a hillside above a deep, sheltered bay at the mouth of the Krka river. Its centrepiece is the Cathedral of St James, a UNESCO-listed Renaissance church built entirely of stone, with a vault of interlocking slabs and a frieze of carved faces around the apse. Narrow stepped lanes lead past small churches to the fortress of St Michael, and the town, first recorded in the eleventh century, is unusual among Dalmatian ports in not being a Greek or Roman foundation.

Krka National Park, a short drive inland, is a chain of travertine waterfalls and lakes, with wooden walkways above the water and a monastery on the island of Visovac. Offshore lies the Kornati archipelago, a scatter of bare limestone islands reached by boat, and nearer the coast are the quiet island of Prvić and the old riverside town of Skradin. Trogir and Split are within reach along the coast.

Dalmatian cooking relies on the sea and the stony hills: grilled fish, octopus baked under an iron bell, smoked ham, sheep's cheese and olive oil. Red wine from the Babić grape grows on the stony slopes around Primošten, further down the coast. Summers are hot and dry, with concerts in the squares, and spring and early autumn are milder and quieter.
