Korčula lies off the coast of southern Dalmatia, a long island covered in Aleppo pine, with Korčula Town on a small peninsula at its eastern end. The old town is enclosed by stone walls and towers, and its streets branch off a central spine in a herringbone pattern. St Mark's Cathedral, in pale local stone, stands at the top of the town, and Marco Polo is said by local tradition to have been born here.
In summer the moreška, a sword dance with a tale of knights and a captured bride, is performed in Korčula Town. In Lumbarda, vines grow in sandy soil for Grk, a white wine made only there, and Smokvica and Čara make Pošip. Vela Luka in the west has fishing boats and caves. Across the narrow channel, the Pelješac peninsula has the long walls of Ston and its oyster beds.
Seafood comes first: grilled fish, octopus and black cuttlefish risotto, with Žrnovo's handmade pasta, makaruni, served in a meat sauce. Summers are hot, dry and sunny, and the sea stays warm into October. Olive oil, figs and a glass of Grk or Pošip complete the table.
