There you will see the temple of Zeus which in antiquity was housing one of the 7 wonders of the Ancient world, the gold and ivory statue of Zeus, created by the famous Phidias. You will also see the temple of Hera, the shrine of Pelops (one of the oldest in the sanctuary), the Council house where the athletes took the Olympic oath, the Treasury houses, the Gymnasium and the Palestra where they used to exercise for a month prior to the Games. Also, you will visit the Stadium where the marble starting blocks are still in position.

  2. Continue your tour and visit the world-famous Archeological Museum of Olympia where you can admire the unique statue of Hermes and other impressive exhibits. Although secluded near the west coast of the Peloponnese, Olympia became the most important religious and athletic center in Greece.

  3. Afterwards, we will reach the modern village of Olympia and enjoy a walk there for shopping or coffee in one of the many available places. If time permits, we will also make a visit to the Association of Agriculture where you will have the opportunity to taste for free local wine and olive oil (the region of Olympia and Peloponnese in general is one with the highest production of olive oil).

About Olympia

Olympia is a quiet village in the western Peloponnese, grown around the ancient sanctuary of Zeus where the first Olympic Games were held.

Olympia lies in a green valley where the rivers Alfeios and Kladeos meet, in the western Peloponnese. For well over a thousand years, beginning in the eighth century BC, the sanctuary hosted games in honour of Zeus every four years. The ruins include the Temple of Zeus, once home to a gold-and-ivory statue of the god by Phidias, famed across the classical world; the Temple of Hera; and the original stadium, entered through a vaulted tunnel.
