Paris Composers: A Self-Guided Walking Tour
- 1.3–2.5 hours
- Free cancellation up to 24h before
- Guided in English
- Instant confirmation
Highlights
This self-guided walking tour turns Paris into an open-air concert hall, following composers like Chopin, Berlioz, and Debussy through the streets and stories that shaped their music. One stop marks the exact square where more than 1,100 people were guillotined, the same execution scene Berlioz imagined in Symphonie fantastique. Start at the Palais Garnier, the gilded opera house that set the stage for Paris's musical ambitions. A few streets away, Chopin spent his final weeks at Place Vendôme; his funeral at La Madeleine drew crowds to hear Mozart's Requiem. The walk crosses onto the Champs-Élysées before finishing near the Arc de Triomphe, where Debussy's Clair de Lune brings the afternoon to a dreamlike close. Perfect for music lovers, history buffs, or anyone who wants to see Paris differently, this walk blends culture, drama, and beautiful music into a single afternoon. Itinerary
You'll pass by the magnificent Beaux-Arts façade of the Palais Garnier, Paris's legendary opera house, and hear about the 1861 Tannhäuser scandal, the building's role as the inspiration for The Phantom of the Opera, and its place as a symbol of 19th-century French cultural ambition. Entry to the interior is not included in this tour and requires a separate ticket.
You'll pass by the storied Café de la Paix, opened in 1862 and once a favourite meeting place for composers, conductors, publishers and critics discussing the latest premieres. This is a working café and is not a stop included in the tour.
You'll walk through the elegant Place Vendôme, where Frédéric Chopin spent his final years at number 12 and where the Vendôme Column, cast from captured enemy cannons, commemorates Napoleon's victory at Austerlitz. The square is a public space with free access.
You'll pass by the Church of La Madeleine, a striking building modelled on a Roman temple that hosted Chopin's funeral in 1849 and shaped the careers of organists Camille Saint-Saëns and Gabriel Fauré. Entry to the church is free, though it's not a guided stop on this tour.
You'll walk into the vast Place de la Concorde, once the site of the guillotine during the French Revolution, where more than 1,100 people, including Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, were executed. The square is a public space with free, unrestricted access.
You'll pause before the Luxor Obelisk at the centre of Place de la Concorde, a 3,300-year-old monument gifted to France by Egypt in 1831 and installed here in 1836 after a two-year voyage. As a monument in a public square, it's freely viewable at any time.
You'll conclude your walk on the world-famous Avenue des Champs-Élysées, as you look toward the Arc de Triomphe. This is a public avenue with free access.

About Paris
Paris pairs grand boulevards and riverside monuments with café terraces, art collections of global stature and neighbourhoods that feel like villages.
