  2. Step back nearly 3,000 years and discover the birthplace of the Olympic Games. Ancient Olympia hosted the first recorded Games in 776 BC and remains one of Greece’s most important archaeological sites. Explore the ruins of the Temple of Zeus, once home to one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and visit the Temple of Hera, where the Olympic Flame is traditionally lit before beginning its journey to the modern Games. Walk through the ancient gymnasium and training grounds, then enter the original Olympic Stadium, where athletes once competed for glory. You can even stand—or run—on the same historic track used by competitors thousands of years ago, a tradition revived during the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.

  3. Deepen your journey with a visit to one of Greece’s most renowned museums, where the past unfolds with striking clarity. Step into galleries where history comes alive through the exquisite Hermes by Praxiteles, alongside timeless sculptures, precious artifacts, and everyday objects that reveal the rhythm of ancient life. Each display weaves together threads of mythology, athletic tradition, and divine legacy, offering a richer understanding of the world you’ve just walked through among the ruins. It’s the ideal complement to your site visit—adding depth, context, and wonder at every turn.

  4. Enjoy some leisure time in the peaceful village of modern Olympia, home to fewer than 600 residents. About Katakolo

Katakolo is a small port on the west coast of the Peloponnese and the nearest harbour to ancient Olympia, where the Olympic Games began.

Katakolo sits at the tip of a small cape in the region of Elis, facing the Ionian Sea, with the island of Zakynthos visible on a clear day across the water. The port is a small waterfront of tavernas and cafés along a quay. Pyrgos, the regional town, lies a short way inland, and the coast on either side has long sandy beaches.
