Highlights

Newcastle Upon Tyne is originally, a Roman city which later featured heavily in wars with Scotland. Its many fine buildings largely a legacy of the Industrial Revolution and its famed coal and shipbuilding industries which brought wealth and invention. Known around its world for its beer and bridges amongst other things, Newcastle is a city like no other and we will get to see both the most amazing urban train view in Britain as well as a street voted Britains most beautiful (not Edinburgh or Bath)! See the famous quayside and markets, get a taste of the friendliest city in Britain and voted the second most partying city in the world after Rio (take that London, Las Vegas and Monaco). See the castle, visit the cathedrals, the markets, experience the culture. We will surely find a great place to eat or drink in this city with a well renowned reputation for for its pubs before we return back to London. If time allows we can customise this tour and visit The Angel of the North.

    5 min

  2. Not the most famous bridge but perhaps the best in Newcastle. With a road and walkways high over the river and an amazing view made all the more incredible as trains pass on the level above! Fantastic old engineering that changed Britain. Also the best place to see.....

    5 min

  3. See the famous Tyne Bridge, the most famous of the many bridges across the River Tyne and learn of why this design was chosen.

    10 min

  4. Perhaps the finest musical acoustics outside of London.

    5 min

  10. The Romans first built a castle here and of course we are near one end of Hadrians Wall that spans the country to the Tyne which was then an impenetrable defensive barrier.

    20 min

  11. The current Norman castle is pretty much built on and over the old Roman one but we can see some foundations and ruins nearby and find out exactly why they are here.

    5 min

  12. Built in 1247, this formidable 'new' entrance to the castle has a history as grim as its name suggests!

About Newcastle-upon-Tyne

Newcastle upon Tyne is a river city in north-east England, with a Norman castle keep, a row of bridges over the Tyne and a revived quayside.

Newcastle grew around a Roman bridge crossing and takes its name from the castle begun here in 1080 by Robert Curthose, son of William the Conqueror. The stone keep still stands above the railway, beside the Black Gate. The Tyne is crossed by the Swing Bridge, the High Level Bridge and the steel arch of the Tyne Bridge, and Grainger Town has classical streets of the 1830s with Grey's Monument at their heart.
