Itinerary

  1. Melissani Cave is located not far from Sami. It is a lacustrine cave of unique beauty and fully developed cave, which is 3.5 km long, 40m wide and 36m high. Melissani cave constitutes a unique geological phenomenon. It was created by a mechanical and chemical process called karstikopoiisi (dissolution of rocks) during which water enters the calcareous rocks, erodes them and creates hollows. The underground Melissani lake was discovered in 1951 by speleontologist Giannis Petrochilos. A big part of its roof has fallen down revealing an amazing sight. During antiquity the lake was a place of worship dedicated to Pan and Nymph Melissani. Visitors reach the lake by an underground tunnel and have the opportunity to explore it with a boat and a guide. Therefore, they can admire this unique natural work of sculpture created by the stalactites and the crystal blue-green color of the waters.

  2. It is the trademark of Kefalonia with numerous international awards as one of the best beaches in the Mediterranean and it is certainly worth it. Moreover, every year Myrtos is being awarded from the Greek National Tourism Organisation (GNTO) with the blue flag. The scenery from above is unique and the view is certainly breathtaking. Green rocks that result in quite a long beach with white pebbles and the Ionian Sea at its best.

  3. At the north part of the island, picturesque Assos is built alongside of the cliffs of the same peninsula, among pine trees and cypresses. Sparsely built with traditional color, in an impressive landscape, Assos fascinates with the peace and simplicity it depicts

  4. Fiscardo survived the destructive earthquake of 1953. Most of the buildings preserve their traditional local colour that travels you back in time: Grand mansions with elegant balconies, old two-storey houses, the dark red of roof tiles, the greenish of mountainsides, the blue of the sea and the overall scenery is enchanting.

About Cephalonia

Cephalonia is the largest of the Ionian islands, a mountainous Greek island of white pebble beaches, caves, vineyards and the fir forests of Mount Ainos.

Cephalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands, off Greece's west coast, a rugged island of limestone mountains, deep bays and olive groves. A strong earthquake in 1953 levelled most of its towns, and many were rebuilt in a plainer style; Fiskardo, in the north, was spared and keeps its Venetian-style houses around a small harbour. Argostoli, the capital, has a long waterfront and a stone causeway bridge across its lagoon.

Top-ranked sights in Cephalonia: Myrtos Beach (Paralía Mirtos).
