Highlights
Celebrate Yucatán’s Day of the Dead tradition through a seasonal cooking experience dedicated to Hanal Pixán, the Maya tradition of honoring loved ones who have passed away. Hanal Pixán means “Food for the Souls” in Maya. During this celebration, families prepare special foods and gather to welcome and honor the souls of their loved ones. Begin with a guided visit to Lucas de Gálvez and San Benito markets, where you’ll shop for the fresh local ingredients used in your Hanal Pixán menu while discovering traditional Yucatecan products. Then, head to an authentic local home for a hands-on cooking class. Guided by a local cook, you’ll prepare a special menu created exclusively for the Hanal Pixán season and learn about the traditional dishes, ingredients, and cooking techniques associated with the celebration. This seasonal experience combines a local market visit, hands-on cooking, and Yucatecan Day of the Dead traditions in an authentic home setting.

About Mérida
Mérida, capital of Yucatán, is a Spanish colonial city of grand boulevards and mansions, a base for Maya ruins, cenotes and flamingo lagoons.
Francisco de Montejo the Younger founded Mérida in 1542 on the site of a Maya town, and stone from its temples went into the cathedral and houses. The Plaza Grande is the heart of the city, with the cathedral of San Ildefonso, the Governor's Palace, whose walls are covered by murals of Maya history, and the Casa de Montejo, with an ornate carved façade. The low colonial houses of the centre gave the city its nickname, the White City.
