Experience the best of Mérida

Mérida, capital of Yucatán, is a Spanish colonial city of grand boulevards and mansions, a base for Maya ruins, cenotes and flamingo lagoons.

Francisco de Montejo the Younger founded Mérida in 1542 on the site of a Maya town, and stone from its temples went into the cathedral and houses. The Plaza Grande is the heart of the city, with the cathedral of San Ildefonso, the Governor's Palace, whose walls are covered by murals of Maya history, and the Casa de Montejo, with an ornate carved façade. The low colonial houses of the centre gave the city its nickname, the White City.

Paseo de Montejo, a wide avenue modelled on the Champs-Élysées, is lined with mansions built on the henequen fortunes of the early twentieth century, and the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya explains Maya civilisation. Uxmal, a Maya city with a pyramid and the Nunnery quadrangle, is about an hour south, and Chichén Itzá two hours east. Cenotes, flooded sinkholes, are scattered through the countryside, and flamingos feed at Celestún on the Gulf coast.

Cochinita pibil, pork marinated in achiote and sour orange and slow-cooked in banana leaves, is the dish of Yucatán, with sopa de lima, a lime and chicken soup, panuchos and salbutes, fried tortillas topped with turkey and pickled onion. Xtabentún, an aniseed and honey liqueur, comes from Maya tradition.
