Experience the best of Cozumel
Cozumel is a flat, reef-ringed island off Mexico's Yucatán coast, famed for diving, Maya ruins and calm turquoise water on its sheltered west side.

Cozumel lies about twenty kilometres off the Yucatán coast, a short ferry ride from Playa del Carmen. The main town, San Miguel, faces the mainland with a waterfront promenade, a plaza and small museums, while most of the island is flat jungle and quiet coast. The western side, where the sea is calm, holds the beach clubs and snorkelling spots, and the wild windward east coast has rough surf and empty sand.
The reefs off the west coast, part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, are famed for clear water and drift diving along walls such as Palancar, and Jacques Cousteau helped make the island known to divers in the 1960s. On land, San Gervasio was a Maya sanctuary linked to the goddess Ixchel, and Punta Sur park has a lagoon, a lighthouse and a long beach. The mainland's Maya sites, such as Tulum, are reached by ferry and road.
Island cooking uses Yucatán flavours: cochinita pibil, slow-cooked pork with achiote, lime soup, fish tacos and fresh ceviche. The water is warm all year. The dry months from December to April are the most pleasant, while the hurricane season runs from June to November, with the heaviest rain in September and October.
