Experience the best of Oaxaca City

Oaxaca City is the colonial capital of Oaxaca state, a stone-built highland city of markets, mole, mezcal and Zapotec ruins nearby.

Oaxaca de Juárez sits in a high valley at about 1,500 metres, its centre built of pale green stone around a shaded zócalo. The baroque church of Santo Domingo, with its gilded interior, and the attached former convent, now a cultural museum, are the grandest sights. Streets run with market stalls, painted walls and courtyard cafés, and the historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Monte Albán, the Zapotec hilltop capital with plazas and temples, rises over the valley a few kilometres west. East of the city lie the stone mosaics of Mitla, the huge ancient tree at Santa María del Tule, and the petrified waterfalls of Hierve el Agua. Villages specialise in crafts: woven rugs in Teotitlán del Valle, black pottery at San Bartolo Coyotepec and painted wooden figures called alebrijes.

Oaxaca is widely regarded as one of Mexico's great food cities: mole in many colours, tlayudas, tamales, string cheese and chocolate whisked into hot drinks, and mezcal made from agave. Markets sell toasted grasshoppers. The dry months from November to April are sunny, with warm days; the rains arrive in summer. Day of the Dead at the start of November is the most atmospheric time, and the Guelaguetza festival fills July.
