San José del Cabo grew around a Jesuit mission founded in 1730 and has a peaceful historic centre of low colonial buildings around Plaza Mijares, with the mission church on one side. Art galleries, restaurants and small shops fill the streets, and an estuary north of the beach, the Estero San José, shelters many migrating birds. The town lies at the southern end of the Baja California peninsula, where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific.
A road called the Corridor runs about thirty kilometres west to Cabo San Lucas, where the rock arch at Land's End marks the tip of the peninsula, passing rocky coves and golf courses. Whales pass the coast in winter, and the reefs of Cabo Pulmo National Park lie to the north-east, an hour or more away. The Sierra de la Laguna mountains rise inland, with pine forest and hiking trails, and Todos Santos is on the Pacific coast.
Baja cooking is built on the sea: fish tacos in batter with cabbage and white sauce, ceviche, grilled lobster and chocolate clams. Mezcal and tequila are poured at the bars. Rain is scarce except in the storm season of late summer and autumn.
