Quinta Avenida, the town's long pedestrian street, runs parallel to the beach and is lined with shops, cafés, restaurants and bars that stay busy late. The beaches are wide and white, with Punta Esmeralda a local favourite for its shallow lagoon, and the water is warm and clear for much of the year.

Ferries cross to Cozumel, an island renowned for its coral reefs and drift diving. The coast around Playa is dotted with cenotes, freshwater sinkholes ideal for swimming and snorkelling, and nature parks with underground rivers. Tulum's clifftop Maya ruins, Cobá's pyramid in the jungle and the sea turtles of Akumal Bay are all within an easy drive, and Chichén Itzá makes a longer day trip.

Food ranges from street tacos and cochinita pibil to fresh ceviche and international cooking. Settled, sunny weather runs from late autumn to spring, summer is hot and humid, and the hurricane season runs from early summer to late autumn, when seaweed sometimes washes onto the beaches. Early mornings on the sand are calm and golden.
