The Hotel Zone curves along a narrow strip of land between the Caribbean and the Nichupté Lagoon, lined with resorts and beaches such as Playa Delfines, where the sand is powder-soft and the sea glows in every shade of blue. Downtown Cancun, on the mainland, is where locals eat and shop, with taquerías and evening stalls around Parque de las Palapas.

Isla Mujeres is a short boat ride away, with calm beaches and a relaxed island pace, and snorkellers and divers can explore an underwater sculpture garden on the reef. Inland, the Yucatán's cenotes, natural sinkholes of clear water, are perfect for swimming, and Chichén Itzá with its great pyramid of El Castillo is a classic day trip. Tulum's clifftop ruins and Cobá's jungle pyramid are within reach too.
