Experience the best of Tulum

Tulum pairs clifftop Maya ruins above a turquoise sea with white beaches, jungle cenotes and a laid-back, bohemian town on the Riviera Maya.

The ruins of Tulum, a walled Maya port, stand on a limestone cliff above the Caribbean, with El Castillo overlooking a small cove of white sand. The setting is one of the most photographed in Mexico, and the site is at its loveliest early in the morning, before the heat builds.

South of the ruins, the beach road is lined with small hotels, beach clubs and restaurants hidden in the palms, while the town itself has taquerías, cafés and shops. Cenotes such as Gran Cenote, Dos Ojos and Calavera offer swimming and diving in crystal-clear water, and the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve protects lagoons, mangroves and wildlife to the south. Cobá's jungle pyramid is a short drive inland.

Food blends Yucatecan classics like cochinita pibil and fresh fish with plant-based cafés and creative dining. Late autumn to spring brings the driest, sunniest weather, while summer is hot and humid and falls within the hurricane season, when seaweed sometimes reaches the beaches. Bicycles are a popular way to move between town, beach and ruins.
