About Amritsar

Amritsar is the Sikh holy city of Punjab, built around the gold-domed Golden Temple and its community kitchen, close to the Pakistan border.

Amritsar was founded in 1577 by Guru Ram Das around a sacred pool, and at its centre the Harmandir Sahib, known as the Golden Temple, rises from the water with a gilded dome. Pilgrims of every background walk the marble causeway to the shrine and eat in the langar, a free kitchen that serves a very large number of meals every day. The lanes of the old city lead to the temple's gates.

Top-ranked sights in Amritsar: Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib), Attari-Wagah Border, Jallianwala Bagh.
