Experience the best of Amritsar

Amritsar is the Sikh holy city of Punjab, built around the gold-domed Golden Temple and its community kitchen, close to the Pakistan border.

Amritsar was founded in 1577 by Guru Ram Das around a sacred pool, and at its centre the Harmandir Sahib, known as the Golden Temple, rises from the water with a gilded dome. Pilgrims of every background walk the marble causeway to the shrine and eat in the langar, a free kitchen that serves a very large number of meals every day. The lanes of the old city lead to the temple's gates.

Jallianwala Bagh, a walled garden, marks the 1919 massacre, and the Partition Museum in the old Town Hall tells the story of 1947. Gobindgarh Fort holds exhibits and shows, and the Durgiana Temple is known for its silver doors. About thirty kilometres west, at the Wagah border, soldiers from both countries lower their flags each evening in a ceremony.

Amritsari kulcha, bread stuffed with spiced potato and served with chickpeas, is the city's signature breakfast, along with tall glasses of lassi and Amritsari fried fish. In the foggy winter months, makki di roti with sarson da saag, cornbread with mustard greens, is the Punjabi classic.
