About Cartagena
Cartagena is a Mediterranean port in south-east Spain founded by Carthaginians, with a Roman theatre, a naval arsenal and Modernist buildings.
Cartagena, in the Region of Murcia, was founded by the Carthaginian general Hasdrubal around 227 BC as Qart Hadasht, New Carthage, and later became an important Roman port. Its natural harbour made it a naval base, and it still is one. The Roman Theatre, with tiered seating built into a hillside, was uncovered in the late twentieth century, and a museum leads visitors through to it. The Punic Wall and Roman forum are also on show.
Top-ranked sights in Cartagena: Calle Mayor, Roman Theatre of Cartagena (Teatro Romano de Cartagena), Punic Wall.
