Thessaloniki, Greece's second city, is a Byzantine and Ottoman port on the Aegean, with a waterfront tower, Roman monuments and excellent street food.

Thessaloniki was founded in 315 BC and became one of the main cities of the Roman and Byzantine worlds. The White Tower stands on the waterfront promenade, a rounded Ottoman-era tower that is now the city's emblem, and the Rotunda and the Arch of Galerius recall the Roman ruler who made the city his base. The early Christian and Byzantine churches, among them Agios Dimitrios, are listed by UNESCO.
The Upper Town, Ano Poli, climbs behind Byzantine walls to a hill with views over the Thermaic Gulf, and the Archaeological Museum shows gold from the royal tombs of Macedonia and the Derveni krater, a bronze wine vessel. The city once had a large Sephardic Jewish community, and a museum records that history. Chalkidiki's peninsulas lie to the south-east, Mount Olympus to the south-west, and the royal tombs at Vergina to the west.
Bougatsa, a custard or cheese pie in flaky pastry, is the standard breakfast, and trigona panoramatos are cone-shaped pastries filled with cream. Mezedes fill the taverns of Ladadika and the Modiano market, with grilled octopus, mussels and fried sardines. The waterfront promenade fills with walkers on summer evenings.
