Experience the best of St Augustine

St Augustine is a Florida town on the Atlantic coast, founded by the Spanish in 1565, with a coquina fort, narrow streets and Victorian-era hotels.

St Augustine was founded by the Spanish in 1565 and is the oldest continuously occupied European-founded settlement in the continental United States. The Castillo de San Marcos, a fort of pale coquina shell stone built by the Spanish between 1672 and 1695, guards the waterfront. The Spanish Quarter, pedestrian St George Street and the cathedral basilica sit within a few blocks, and the Bridge of Lions crosses to Anastasia Island.

Flagler College occupies the former Ponce de León Hotel of 1888, with Tiffany windows and a grand dining hall, and the Lightner Museum fills the former Alcazar Hotel across the street. The Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park recalls the Ponce de León legend, the St Augustine Lighthouse rises on Anastasia Island, and Anastasia State Park has a broad beach. The Alligator Farm dates from 1893, and Jacksonville is about sixty kilometres north.

Datil pepper, a fiery local pepper, flavours sauces and sausages, and Minorcan clam chowder recalls the town's settlers from the Mediterranean. Fresh shrimp and Atlantic fish fill the menus. Thousands of lights decorate the old town through the winter holidays.
