The Saronic Gulf Islands lie in the sea between Athens and the Peloponnese, close enough to be reached from Piraeus by ferry or hydrofoil. Aegina, the nearest large island, has the Temple of Aphaia, a Doric temple set among pines, and a harbour town of fishing boats and pistachio sellers. Hydra, where cars are not used, is a rocky island of stone mansions built by sea captains, with donkeys and water taxis doing the carrying.
Poros is separated from the mainland by a narrow strait, with a clock tower above the town and a lemon forest across the water at Galatas. Spetses, the furthest, is a pine-covered island of horse-drawn carriages and a grand waterfront, and with Hydra it sent fleets to the war of independence in 1821. Salamis, close to Athens, lies in the bay where a Greek fleet defeated the Persians in 480 BC.
Seafood tavernas line the harbours, serving fresh grilled fish, octopus and Spetsiotiko, a local fish baked with tomato and herbs. Aegina is known for its pistachios and Hydra for almond sweets. Summers are hot and dry, with the meltemi wind blowing, and late spring and September are gentler.
