Experience the best of Sapporo

Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido, is a grid-planned city of wide parks, an annual snow festival, miso ramen and mountains close behind.

Sapporo was laid out as a grid in the 1870s, when Japan's government developed the northern island, so its streets are wide and straight, split by Odori Park, a long green strip through the middle. The red-brick former Hokkaido government building and the white clock tower, both from the Meiji period, recall that era, and the Hokkaido Shrine lies in a wooded park in the west.

Each February the Snow Festival fills Odori Park with huge sculptures of snow and ice. The Moiwa ropeway and the Okurayama ski jump give views of the city, and a red-brick brewery that houses a beer museum records the city's drink. Otaru's canal, with its glass workshops and sushi counters, is a train ride west, and the hot springs of Jozankei, Noboribetsu and Lake Toya are within a couple of hours.

Miso ramen was developed in Sapporo, and the bowls come with corn and butter. Soup curry, a thin, spiced broth with large pieces of vegetable and chicken, is another local invention, and jingisukan, grilled lamb cooked on a domed pan, is eaten with beer. Crab, sea urchin and salmon roe come from Hokkaido's waters. Snow lies deep through the winter, while summers are cooler than elsewhere in Japan.
