Nagano sits in a basin among the mountains of central Honshu, and Zenko-ji, a temple traditionally founded in the seventh century, is the heart of the city. Pilgrims have come to it for more than a thousand years, up a long approach lined with shops and lodgings to a great wooden hall. The city hosted the Winter Olympics in 1998.
In the hills north-east, Jigokudani Monkey Park is where wild snow monkeys bathe in hot springs. Togakushi has shrines in a cedar forest and a noodle-making tradition, Obuse has a museum devoted to Hokusai, and Matsumoto Castle, a black-walled keep, is within reach to the south-west. The Japanese Alps rise to the west, with the ski resort of Hakuba, while Shiga Kogen and the hot-spring village of Nozawa Onsen lie in the hills to the north-east.
Shinshu, as Nagano was once known, is famed for its soba buckwheat noodles, for oyaki, dumplings stuffed with vegetables, and for apples and grapes from the orchards. Sake is brewed across the prefecture, and the slopes turn red and gold in autumn.
