Naha is the capital and main port of Okinawa Prefecture, on the west coast of Okinawa's main island in the East China Sea. For centuries it served the Ryukyu Kingdom, whose kings lived at Shuri Castle on a hill above the city, and the castle site and the nearby Tamaudun royal tombs are part of a World Heritage listing. Kokusai-dori, the International Street, runs through the centre lined with shops, and Makishi Public Market sells fish and pork.

Tsuboya pottery street keeps Okinawa's ceramic tradition, and Naminoue shrine perches on a seaside cliff above a small beach. Shikinaen, a royal garden in the Ryukyu style, has ponds and a stone-paved path. Ferries leave from Tomari port for the Kerama Islands, a short sail west, where clear water and sea turtles draw snorkellers, and in the north the Churaumi Aquarium is known for its whale sharks. Southern Okinawa holds memorials to the Battle of Okinawa in 1945.

Okinawa soba, wheat noodles in pork broth, goya champuru, a stir-fry of bitter melon, tofu and egg, and rafute, pork belly braised with awamori and sugar, are staples, with umi-budo, sea grapes, as a seaside snack. Awamori is the local distilled spirit. Beach weather lasts from spring to autumn, and winters are mild.
