Experience the best of Hiroshima

Hiroshima, on Japan's Seto Inland Sea, is a rebuilt river city whose Peace Memorial Park and museum recall the atomic bombing of 1945.

Hiroshima spreads across the delta of the Ōta River, whose channels, bridges and trams give the city an open feel. The atomic bomb of 6 August 1945 destroyed most of it. The Peace Memorial Park beside the river holds the Atomic Bomb Dome, a ruined building left standing and listed by UNESCO, the Peace Memorial Museum and the Children's Peace Monument.

Hiroshima Castle was rebuilt after the war, and the Shukkeien garden, a landscape of miniature hills and ponds, dates from the seventeenth century. A ferry or train leads to Miyajima, where the red torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine stands in the sea at high tide, deer wander the paths, and a ropeway climbs Mount Misen. Iwakuni's five-arched wooden Kintai Bridge lies to the south-west, and the cycling route of the Shimanami Kaido begins at Onomichi to the east.

Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, a savoury pancake layered with cabbage, noodles and egg, is the city's pride, and the oysters of the bay, Japan's largest harvest, are grilled, fried or eaten in rice. Momiji manju, maple-leaf cakes filled with red bean, come from Miyajima. Cherry blossom opens in late March, and the maples at Miyajima turn red in November.
