Fujikawaguchiko stretches along the northern shore of Lake Kawaguchi and includes parts of Lakes Saiko, Shojiko and Motosu, which are among the Fuji Five Lakes. Mount Fuji, 3,776 metres high, fills the southern sky, and on still days its cone is reflected in the water. The mountain and its surroundings are a World Heritage cultural site. The lakeshore has hot-spring hotels and boats.
A ropeway climbs Mount Tenjo for a view across the lake to Fuji. Oishi Park is full of flowers, with lavender in early summer. The Itchiku Kubota Art Museum shows kimonos dyed in a revived silk technique, and Saiko Iyashi-no-Sato Nenba is a rebuilt village of thatched houses. Lava caves lie in the forest nearby, and in spring the moss phlox at Lake Motosu spreads pink carpets over the slopes.
Hōtō, thick flat noodles simmered with pumpkin and vegetables in miso broth, is the dish of Yamanashi, a prefecture of vineyards and orchards known for grapes and peaches. Cherry blossom comes in April, maple leaves turn red in November, and the clear air of winter gives the sharpest views of the mountain.
