San Miguel de Allende sits at about 1,900 metres in the Bajío highlands of Guanajuato, a town of cobbled streets and painted colonial houses built when silver and trade made the region rich. The Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, with its pink sandstone spires, dominates the Jardín, the main square. The town takes the second half of its name from Ignacio Allende, a leader of the independence movement born here, and the historic centre is a World Heritage site.
The town has long drawn painters and writers, and the Instituto Allende and the Fábrica La Aurora, a former textile factory now full of galleries and studios, keep that tradition alive. Terrace restaurants look over the rooftops. About fourteen kilometres north, the Sanctuary of Atotonilco, a pilgrimage church with a painted interior, is nicknamed the Sistine Chapel of Mexico, and Dolores Hidalgo, where the independence uprising began in 1810, is also near.
Highland Mexican cooking runs from tamales and chilaquiles to Guanajuato enchiladas and hot chocolate, with mezcal and tequila behind the bars. In September fireworks light the dawn sky for the Alborada, the festival of the town's patron saint, and in June costumed crowds parade for St Anthony. The weather is dry and sunny for most of the year, with rain from June to September.
