Experience the best of Rovereto

Rovereto sits on the Leno stream where the Adige valley narrows between mountains, a short way north of Lake Garda. Its old centre is a quiet grid of palaces and squares with a Venetian look, a reminder that the city belonged to Venice before it passed to Austria. Mozart gave a concert here as a boy in 1769.

The Mart museum, a domed building designed by Mario Botta, shows modern and contemporary art, and the Casa d'Arte Futurista Depero preserves the work of the Futurist artist Fortunato Depero. The Campana dei Caduti, a huge bronze bell cast from melted cannons of the First World War, rings a hundred strokes each evening from a hill above the town, and the castle houses a museum of the Italian war front. Monte Pasubio, with its wartime tunnels, rises nearby.

Marzemino, a red wine grown on the hills around Isera, is the local pride, and Mozart's Don Giovanni praises it at the supper scene. Trentino tables add canederli dumplings, polenta and carne salada, a cured beef. The valley is cooler and fresher than the lake shore, and autumn brings the grape harvest and golden hillsides.
