Lake Garda, the largest lake in Italy, stretches about fifty kilometres from the Alpine foothills in the north to the wide plain in the south, shared by Lombardy, Veneto and Trentino. Mountains plunge into its northern end, while the southern shores are gentle and open. Sirmione, a village on a narrow peninsula, has a moated Scaliger castle and the Roman ruins known as the Grottoes of Catullus, and Malcesine's castle stands on the eastern shore.
A cable car from Malcesine climbs Monte Baldo for views over the lake, and Riva del Garda, at the northern tip, is a windsurfing and sailing centre where steady winds blow most afternoons. On the western shore, Gardone Riviera has the Vittoriale, the house and gardens of the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio. Verona, with its Roman arena, is about thirty kilometres to the south-east, and the Dolomites lie to the north.
Olive oil from the lake's shores is a local product, and lake fish such as lavarello and trout are grilled or fried in lakeside restaurants. The wines of the shores include Bardolino reds and Lugana whites. The lake softens the climate, so olive trees and lemon terraces grow beneath the Alps, and spring to early autumn is the season on the water.
