The historic centre, a dense grid of streets laid out by the ancient Greeks, is a world of churches, street shrines and laundry strung between balconies. Spaccanapoli cuts straight through it, Via San Gregorio Armeno is lined with nativity-scene workshops, and the Sansevero Chapel holds the astonishing Veiled Christ. Underground, tunnels and cisterns reveal the Greek and Roman city below.

The National Archaeological Museum houses treasures from Pompeii and Herculaneum, and the Royal Palace, the Teatro di San Carlo and the glass-roofed Galleria Umberto I cluster around the vast Piazza del Plebiscito. Castel dell'Ovo juts into the bay, while the hilltop Castel Sant'Elmo and the Certosa di San Martino look across the whole city to the volcano.

Pizza here is soft, blistered and simple, with the Margherita the classic, and street food runs to fried pizza, flaky sfogliatelle and dense espresso. Spring and autumn are perfect for exploring, and in September crowds pack the cathedral for the feast of San Gennaro, the city's patron saint.
