The Adige curves around Verona's old centre, and the city's Roman past is plain to see in the Arena, an amphitheatre of the first century that still stages open-air opera in summer. Piazza delle Erbe, the market square on the old Roman forum, is lined with frescoed houses and has a column topped by the lion of Venice, and the Torre dei Lamberti beside it can be climbed. The historic city is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Juliet's House, a medieval courtyard house with a balcony tied to Shakespeare's play, draws crowds, while the Scaliger Tombs, Gothic family monuments in iron cages, and Castelvecchio, a red-brick castle with an arched bridge, belong to the city of the Scaliger lords. The Ponte Pietra is the Roman bridge across the river. Lake Garda lies half an hour to the north-west, and the Valpolicella vineyards are in the hills beyond.

Risotto all'Amarone, made with the dark wine of Valpolicella, is a local classic, along with pastissada de caval, a slow-cooked horse stew, and bigoli, thick pasta served in a duck or anchovy sauce. Pandoro, the tall golden Christmas cake, was first made in Verona. Soave and Bardolino wines are poured in the osterie.
