Experience the best of Sorrento
Sorrento perches on cliffs above the Bay of Naples, a charming lemon-scented town that makes an easy base for Capri, Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast.

The town's centre is Piazza Tasso, from which narrow lanes run past churches, shops selling limoncello and inlaid woodwork, and the peaceful cloister of San Francesco. Steps and lifts lead down the cliffs to Marina Piccola, where the boats leave, and to Marina Grande, a fishing harbour with seafood restaurants right by the water.
The views across the bay to Vesuvius are lovely from the clifftop gardens of the Villa Comunale, especially at sunset. The ruins of a Roman villa at Bagni della Regina Giovanna, set around a natural rock pool, make a beautiful walk, and the Valley of the Mills, an overgrown ravine with an abandoned mill in the middle of town, is a curious sight. Olive and lemon groves climb the hills behind.
Ferries cross to Capri, and the coastal road winds to Positano and Amalfi, while Pompeii and Herculaneum are a short train ride away. Local food stars lemons in every form, gnocchi baked with tomato and mozzarella, and fresh seafood. The weather is kindest in late spring and early autumn, and at Easter hooded processions wind through the old town by candlelight.
