Experience the best of Salerno
Salerno is a port city at the eastern end of the Amalfi Coast, with a Norman cathedral, a palm-lined seafront and a castle on the hill above.

Salerno curves around a gulf with a long palm-lined waterfront, the Lungomare, and a medieval centre of narrow lanes behind it. The cathedral, begun in the eleventh century under the Norman duke Robert Guiscard, has an arcaded atrium and a tall bell tower, and the city was home to the Schola Medica Salernitana, one of the earliest medical schools in Europe. Above, Arechi Castle looks out over the bay.
The Minerva Garden, a terraced medieval garden of medicinal plants linked to the city's old medical school, and the Via dei Mercanti are pleasant for walking. Ferries run along the Amalfi Coast from the port to Amalfi and Positano in the warmer months. South of the city, the Greek temples at Paestum are among the best preserved in the world, and the potters of Vietri sul Mare, just west, paint colourful ceramics.
Buffalo mozzarella, fresh pasta with seafood, fried anchovies and lemon cakes are staples here, and colatura, an anchovy sauce, comes from nearby Cetara. Rustic cooking from the Cilento coast also appears. The warm months from April to October suit the beach and boat trips, and in winter the streets are lit with a festival of illuminated art installations.
