Experience the best of Lake Como
Lake Como is a deep, Y-shaped lake in Lombardy, ringed by steep green mountains, pastel villages, ornate villas and terraced gardens.

Lake Como is shaped like an upside-down Y, with three arms that meet near Bellagio. At more than 400 metres deep, it is one of the deepest lakes in Europe, held between steep wooded slopes that rise towards the Alps. Villages with painted houses and small harbours stand along the water, and a network of ferries links them, making a boat the best way to see the shoreline.
Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo and Villa del Balbianello at Lenno are among the most visited houses, with gardens that tumble to the water. Varenna is a small town of colourful houses on the eastern shore, Bellagio sits on its promontory, and the city of Como at the southern tip has a cathedral, a funicular to the hilltop village of Brunate and a long silk-making history. Lugano in Switzerland and Milan are each within an hour or so.
Lakeside menus serve perch fillets with risotto, polenta, cheeses from the Lombard mountains and missoltini, dried and salted lake fish. Gardens bloom in April and May, summer is warm and busy with swimming and sailing, and September and October are mellow. Winter is quiet, and some hotels and ferries reduce their service.
